Here’s how it all began…

John Benus, Fun Doctor and Founder of What’s Happening Calendars

John Benus’ career in the Fun Industry began when he received a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management from Michigan State.

After serving in the US Coast Guard, Westin Hotels hired him to be their first Regional Manager, based in New York City.  

In the early 80’s, John moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Not knowing the difference between San Bruno and Sausalito, he created the first Color-Coded Maps & Guides of California to discover for himself and share with new residents and visitors.

For the past 15 years, he’s been editing and publishing the unique What’s Happening Calendars gathering info on major and hard to find fun events throughout the entire Bay Area. 

John carefully curated and selected these events and created the worlds’ first Color-Coded Printed Event Calendars.

To keep up with the times, using the same unique events and to save a few trees, John created the new PDF Digital What’s Happening Calendars.  John’s overall philosophy is:

“It’s not how much money or education you have, its how much you share them to help others.”  – John Benus
